It is the story of Vladek Speigelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and his son, a cartoonist coming to terms with his father's story. Maus approaches the unspeakable through the diminutive. Its form, the cartoon (the Nazis are cats, the Jews mice), shocks us out of any lingering sense of familiarity. Maus is a haunting tale within a tale. Vladek's harrowing story of survival is woven into the author's account of his tortured relationship with his aging father. Against the backdrop of guilt brought by survival, they stage a normal life of small arguments and unhappy visits. This astonishing retelling of our century's grisliest news is a story of survival, not only of Vladek but of the children who survive even the survivors. Maus studies the bloody pawprints of history and tracks its meaning for all of us.

Apr 29, 2003

Pros: Raw, emotional, powerful. A feat on all levels.
Cons: Some minor character development issues.
Bottom Line: Maus is a literary triumph, and cannot be missed. It would be a crime to pass this one up because of the manner it chooses to convey it's message with.

Maus- Hell for Rats (Jews)
Feb 11, 2007

Pros: Very Graphic Comic Portrayal of Evil at its worst...
Cons: The fact that Nazi tactics are still being emulated today is just as disturbing.
Bottom Line: Maus is still relevant for many reasons. Racist stereotyping (shown here in animation), hate propaganda, terrorism, and full-time criminal activity still thrive today.

Dec 07, 2001

Pros: The greatest Nonfiction novel ever made... is drawn.
Cons: If you're a nazi or a cat lover, you might find this book "prejudice" ;)
Bottom Line: "Maus" is probably the greatest nonfiction ever written... yet Americans will hate it because it's in "cartoon-form". ARGH! That's it! I'm moving to Japan!
