Tom Wolfe's novel stars a college football star turned millionaire businessman who, in late middle age, finds himself with a troublesome young wife and a mountain of debt. The cast includes Conrad Hensley, who gets in trouble with the law after losing his job; a black ex-athlete accused of raping a white girl; and the lawyer who represents him. This explosive, multihued novel about the tension in late 20th-century Atlanta involves illegal immigrants, prison life, shady real estate deals, trophy wives and the women they have replaced. Wolfe's first novel in 11 years was a finalist for the 1998 National Book Award. A New York Times Notable Book for 1998.

Tom Wolfe Does Dickens With a Drawl

Pros: A welcome return to the BIG novel full of outrageous characters and social satire

Cons: Unfortunately, the main character is unlikable; and then Wolfe cops out on the ending

Bottom Line: Tom Wolfe took a bite from the Big Apple, now he sinks his teeth into the Big Peach in a well-written (though unsatisfying) novel of Atlanta society.

Cons: By the end, Tom Wolfe was running on empty.

Bottom Line: A Man in Full was a huge concept that would have done better to have ended with no resolution than with its pallid and unsatisfactory epilogue.

Pros: Real characters and very vivid descriptions. Wolfe has done it again.

Cons: The length will definitely scare some people away. The plot is complex and will be seen as too much effort for some readers. The ending is a bit contrived.
