Tom Brangwen marries a widow named Lydia Lensky; Lydia's daughter Anna marries her cousin Will, a woodcarver, and has a large family. She falls in love with Anton Skrebensky and, when he is called away to war, responds to an ardent fellow teacher, a feminist and epitome of the "new woman" named Winifred. The struggles of Ursula and her sister Gudrun to find their way in a changing world are continued in Lawrence's WOMEN IN LOVE.
