The first volume of George F. Kennan's SOVIET-AMERICAN RELATIONS 1917-1920 won a Pulitzer Prize in history in 1957. RUSSIA LEAVES THE WAR is Kennan's study of the events from the 1917 November Revolution to Russia's decision, in March 1918, to sign the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, withdrawing from World War I. Kennan provides a close reading of the events of these brief but formative months, telling of Russia's relations with the United States and showing how the groundwork was laid for their later, troubled history in the mid-20th century.
