Solid As A Diamond: Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age
Aug 09, 2003

Pros: A vibrant, multidimensional world full of hip technology and crazy people.
Cons: Wait, there's a story in here somewhere, if I could only find it.
Bottom Line: Sleak technology meets prim Victorian idealism. Stephenson creates a sharp, ultra cool world of nanotechnology. Worthy read, even though the story becomes shallow and convoluted.

Pros: Interesting exploration of benefits and detriments of taking nanotechnology to an extreme.
Cons: Some social forces seem unrealistic, giving the book a psychotic feel.
Bottom Line: I was intrigued by Stephenson's ideas, but extremely disappointed by his development of the cultural implications.

Neal Stephenson, my cyber-fictional platonic analogue: A Diamond Age Review
Nov 28, 2003

Pros: Incredible visions of technology. Penetrating insights into the nature of creativity, morality, spirituality, etc.
Cons: Shaky plot, flat characters, immature style. Occasionally ridiculous fantastical vision of technology.
Bottom Line: Though deriving from an immature Stephenson writing style, his piercing insight into society is unfailing. He provides exceptionally rational brain fodder for understanding the nature of creativity, morality, and spirituality.
